Do Obesogens Make Us Fat?

Why do some people gain weight so fast and tough to control? Conventional wisdom believes that overeating and lack of exercise are the root causes. It may be true but there’s more to it than just overeating. There has to be something to blame on my weight gain. A culprit that is lurking in our life, yet we know nothing about or never thought it would affect one’s weight.

Obesogens are catching the eyes of researchers in finding why many people, at the start of birth, get fatter and heavier. Obesogens are chemical compound, in particular, environmental chemical compound, that disrupts the normal metabolism of lipids in our body and eventually lead to potential diabetes.

According to Wikipedia -
Obesogens are foreign chemical compounds that disrupt normal development and balance of lipid metabolism, which in some cases, can lead to obesity. Obesogens may be functionally defined as chemicals that inappropriately alter lipid homeostasis and fat storage, change metabolic set points, disrupt energy balance or modify the regulation of appetite and satiety to promote fat accumulation and obesity.

There are many diverse proposed mechanisms through which obesogens can meddle with the body's adipose tissue biology. Obesogens have been detected in the body both as a result of intended administration of obesogenic chemicals in the form of pharmaceutical drugs such as diethylstilbestrol, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and thiazolidinedione and as a result of unintentional exposure to environmental obesogens such as tributyltin, bisphenol A, diethylhexylphthalate, and perfluorooctanoate. Emerging data from laboratories around the world suggests that other chemicals will be confirmed as falling under this proposed classification in the near future, and that there may be some serious biological effects due to exposure to these chemicals that still remain undiscovered. Till now, 20 chemicals have been found responsible for making one fat.

Fructose, a common name for corn syrup, is found on sweetened foods. There is a research study that taking fructose will induce consumer to eat more. Suspected possible candidates of obesogen are dioxin, fructose, DDT, monosodium glutamate (MSG), nicotine, biphenol, DES, PCB, many others. So far, there are around 30-40 suspected endocrine disruptive compounds in our environment and many kids who were born and at the early stage of their childhood development, became obese. Clinical studies show evidence that their obesity was highly linked to exposure to obesogen when they were conceived. That's why pregnant women are advised to eat organic foods and stay away from chemicals.

There are many different ways in which obesogenic drugs and chemicals can act in order to disrupt the body's adipose tissue biology. It can alter the action of metabolic sensors in which obesogens mimic metabolic ligands acting to either block or upregulate hormone receptors; dysregulation of sex steroid synthesis, in which they alter the ratio of sex hormones leading to changes in their control of lipid balance; and finally, changes in the central integration of energy balance including the regulation of appetite, satiety in the brain and the reprogramming of metabolic set points.

While obesogens can be introduced to the body intentionally via administration of obesogenic pharmaceuticals, exposure can also occur through chemical exposure to obesogens found in the environment such as organotins by consuming contaminated seafood, agricultural products, and drinking water as well as from exposure to leaching from plastics and xenobiotics would be BPA from polycarbonate plastics, phthalate plasticizers used to soften PVC plastics to name a few.
People are exposed to obesogens on a daily basis like water bottles, microwaveable popcorn, nonstick pans, shower curtains and etc without even knowing the effect. We wonder why gaining weight is easier than losing weight with no answer to come up with.  We interact with them on a daily basis, unkowingly, at work, school and home without knowing the consequences to our health because it is convenient. Are we feeding our body with obesogens unintentionally?
Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an industrial chemical and organic compound that has been used in the production of plastics and resins for over a half-century. It is used in products such as toys, medical devices, plastic food and beverage containers, shower curtains, dental sealants and compounds, and register receipts.[51] BPA has been shown to seep into food sources from containers or into the body just by handling products made from it. Certain researchers suggest that BPA actually decreases the fat cell count in the body, but at the same time increasing the size of the ones remaining; therefore, no difference in weight is shown, and an individual is even likely to gain more.
High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is found in a good majority of products on grocery store shelves. It is used as a food and drink sweetener, and is an obesogen. Acting on insulin and leptin in the body, HFCS potentially increases appetite and fat production.
Nicotine is the chemical found in tobacco products and certain insecticides. As an obesogen, nicotine mostly acts on prenatal development after maternal smoking occurs. A strong association has been made between maternal smoking and childhood overweight/obesity, with nicotine as the single causal agent.
Arsenic is a semi-metallic element found in and on most naturally occurring substances on Earth. It can be found in the soil, ground water, air, and in small concentrations in food. Arsenic has many applications such as in the production of insecticides, herbicides, pesticides and electronic devices. The development of diabetes has been linked to arsenic exposure from drinking water and occupational contact.
Pesticides are substances used to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate pests, and they have been used throughout all of recorded history. Some pesticides persist for short periods of time and some for long periods of time which are considered persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Several cross-sectional studies have shown pesticides as obesogens, linking them to obesity, diabetes and other morbidities.
Pharmaceutical drugs are also potentially obesogens. From 2005-2008, 11% of Americans aged 12 and over took antidepressant medications. Certain antidepressants, known as selectively serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are potentially adding to the almost 100 million obese individuals in the U.S. A key function of SSRI antidepressants is to regulate serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT) which can affect food intake and lipid accumulation leading to obesity.
Organotins such as tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPT) are endocrine disruptors that have been shown to increase triglyceride storage in adipocytes. Although they have been widely used in the marine industry since the 1960s, other common sources of human exposure include contaminated seafood and shellfish, fungicides on crops and as antifungal agents used in wood treatments, industrial water systems and textiles. Organotins are also being used in the manufacture of PVC plastics and have been identified in drinking water and food supplies.
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a surfactant used for reduction of friction, and it is also used in nonstick cookware. PFOA has been detected in the blood of more than 98% of the general US population. It is a potential endocrine disruptor. Animal studies have shown that prenatal exposure to PFOA is linked to obesity when reaching adulthood.
The most recent research suggests avoiding the use of plastic containers, air fresheners, non-stick pans, pre-packaged foods, and eating more organic foods.
More research is still needed on the topic of obesogens as the majority has been inconclusive. Research directed towards understanding associations between environmental exposures and type 1 diabetes in particular, is considered a critical data gap[according to whom?] that can be filled in by public health researchers and practitioners. The specific roles of factors such as genetics and the different physical manifestations of obesity for example, need to be incorporated in the design of these studies.

First Lamb This Year

If there’s a new kid in town, we have a new lamb in our field. After breeding season comes the baby season and we are expecting at least one or two lambs from our 3 ewes and 1 ram. We got them from a generous friend who has no place to keep them she decided to give it to us. We have 7 acres in our place which should be enough for the sheep to roam around and eat grass. Grass fed sheep sure are better than grain fed ones. It’s more natural. At first it was kind of overwhelming as we never had sheep ever. It was a bit easier as we learn little by little how to take care of them. Everyday was learning experience to us and it was fun. As we anticipate the new addition in our sheep clan, it was exciting like having a baby in the family.

It was late afternoon when we discovered the lamb, still bloody and weak. I was watering the garden and thought a stroll might be a good thing to do as the weather was perfect. I was enjoying my walk, enjoying the smell of nature and bathing with sunshine all by myself. As if there is no other human that exists in my small world. I look at the trees, waving at me, saying hi for the thousandth times. As gentle as they are, they look huge to me for the eucalyptus have grown so tall. The pliant bamboos sway like they enjoy every bit of wind hitting them all day. All of a sudden I saw this tiny black thing from afar, wriggling, trying to stand tall and fall back to the ground. I thought it was a puppy. Maybe our neighbor’s puppy got away or strayed far enough and can’t find his way. I bother not to check it out for it looks so tiny. When the sound of baaa came to my ears, tiny faint cry of a newborn child, my mother instinct kicked in and I ran to where the sound is coming from. Tiny and fragile, I saw the most wonderful thing in the world for a moment. A baby lamb, struggling to stand, hoping to find some comfort, whoever can give is crying for help. The mother ewe comes running to comfort her child, not worrying about her health, no recuperating time for her because she only cares for her newborn. The baby lamb calm down when the mother was close enough and immediately searched where milk is. Using the sense of smell, the baby lamb kept searching for tits till it found one. And they bonded like it was forever…

The ewe cleaned up the baby lamb thoroughly, licking and comforting at the same time. Now, the baby lamb stayed close to the mother wherever it goes. They are now a twosome. Once in a while the lamb tries to run around but comes back to milk again. It was so beautiful to see them, so perfect for each other.

A Note From My Son

Okay, so this is what happened and I’m sure most of you will be able to relate to my experience. At least once in your lifetime you lost something. Well, car key to be specific as it is one of the top objects that a person loses. We drive the car to and from work every day and a car key make a car go places.   I lost my car keys yesterday. I search everywhere, every room, every purse and every place else I believe the key would be. I must have searched the whole house in random but no key was found. I went crazy searching for my car key yesterday until I gave up. My family knew I was looking for my lost car key because I was moving everything in search for my car key. I must have panicked or is it just part of senior moment? You know, when you are aging and you don’t want to get there, yet it is unstoppable because no matter how you try to escape, it would still come and catch up with you? I did not take time to think and retrace back where I went. I just search and searched like it is the only way to find my key which leads to being tired and hopeless, finally giving up thinking it might be best to just get a new key made.  That was my plan for tomorrow for it was near the time for bed. All the searching had made me tired, I just want to slump and enjoy the night, even for just one night.

When I woke up this morning, my thoughts were “my car keys”. I reminded myself to never forget the car keys. As I look up, something was different thou I couldn’t tell at first. Maybe I’m still sleepy, tired from search activity last night. As I focus on what is different, something on the wall is unusual. A note attached on my headboard. It was in bold letter. “Found your car key this morning before heading for school. Drive safely. Your son, Ken”.  The note has a key clinging on the bottom. My son found my car keys! I have my day off today and my son has to go to school early, riding with his dad, they did not even bother to wake me up. That was so nice of my husband and my children. I woke up with a pleasant morning surprise for my car key was right in front of me. Such a wonderful day to share…

That night, I ask my son where he found it and you guess where? The first place to look for – the garage, where the car parks at night. I must have missed it!

I will keep this note for time will come when I will need this note to brighten my day as age catch up with me.

Who is the Boss?

I posted this note - My husband is the boss and he has my permission to say so, on my wall and waited for comments to flow.

So, who is right and who is wrong? One asks.

Now, I am at a risk of not getting his paycheck for posting this! Hahaha. Really, how did this happen? How are husbands the boss, yet with permission from wife? Time has change. Wife no longer the “Yes, Honey” type but husbands otherwise. Wife is no longer the quiet type and cry on the side but husbands end up quiet and cries from the inside. Wife nowadays tell their husbands what they want and husbands learn to listen, "Yes, Honey" as wife submit their to-do list. That is good. This seems to be working and keep peace in homes if most of you agree.

Are husbands becoming smarter, not to disagree with wife? Or they found a way to learn when to disagree? Or it is both ways? I believe so. Husbands and wife kinda learn when to argue and when to just go with the flow to maintain peace and relationship.

But I still believe a good wife always knew when to allow the Husband to foot the bills. Hahaha…Does it really matter who is the boss when love is the bond between the two of you? Does it really matters who foots the bill when love is the answer to all your doubts? Does it really matter who is right or wrong when there is love in the air?

What Does Okay Means?

My daughter was having some breathing problems today. As a concerned parent, I had a small talk with her about taking the inhaler in her backpack just in case she needs it with the instruction to use it only when needed. That means, no playing with it and no sharing to anybody. It also means, it is her private property for the purpose of helping her breath well in case of an attack. Last year, I did the same thing. She had the inhaler in her backpack all year. As a mother, I am concern for her health and believed that doing so is the right thing to do.

When we got to school, I immediately told her teacher that she had the inhaler in her backpack and that she knows how to use it. The teacher said “Okay”.  That was a good reaction for me, relaxed and confident my goal for the day is taken cared of, my daughter will surely take good care of it. I went home and enjoy the day with the chores waiting for me to get done.

I get a call at 10:20 from the office informing me it is absolutely forbidden to bring medicine to school and I needed to come pick her up. I was shocked! Did I miss the teacher’s “Okay” word?  Anyway, I went to the office to deal with it. I was given a form to fill out  and have the doctor sign it. Then I can bring the inhaler to the office; they will keep it locked up there!

I was confused. My purpose to let my daughter carry the inhaler is for her to use it when necessary, if an asthma attack occurs. But with the way I am told by the new law, a kid who has an asthma attack have to go all the way to the office for their inhaler. The office secretary told me that is the law. I wonder how the school deals with a situation like this -  during an asthma attack, the patient just could not make it to the office, end up worst than just having difficulty breathing, collapse and who knows what happens?

Okay, maybe I trust my daughter way too much. As a parent, I should know if my child is trustworthy. It is possible that kids will pass it around friends and that is not good. There are too many possibilities and my only concern is my daughter. What is going to happen if my daughter has a terrible attack and died on the spot before she can get the inhaler? It’s only my over exaggerated thought but it is possible too. What does okay means in this situation?
