What a night to remember

An elderly woman was sitting and hunched over with her purse and lantern (yes an LED lantern) in the median a stone's throw from Island View Casino, one of the busiest crossing just passed Hwy 49.

She was in the middle of the ROAD! I thought I was going to throw up my dinner when I saw her on the road.

I think God put me and my husband at the right time and the right place for the elderly lady, Hwangtze'i Noguoyen. She is a Vietnamese 85 yr old lady who doesn't speak a word of English other than "understanding" the word name.

I was driving on the left lane when I saw just to my left a black mass. I didn't realize it was a person until I was about two arms length from it.

She appeared very disoriented and very lost, Bless her heart. I can not fathom how she ended up in the middle of the road alone like that, but she was coherent just not in English. A lady and I helped her cross the street to a more safer side walk to get help. I walked inside the casino to find someone who can speak Vietnamese to help us out. And was a big no too.

Anyway, long story short, we got the paramedics and GPD (Steven) involved. Not until I suggested we check her purse for any information. YES! It was me who suggested to check her purse, after trying to sensibly speak to her with no avail for half an hour. I finally got a hold of a prescription bottle with her name and her address on it and *Thank You GOD* a phone number.

In fact her family was desperately looking for her in Pass Christian. I spoke to her son and thankfully he spoke English and explained to him that their mother will be driven back to their house in a police car.

I was so heartbroken for her, I can't imagine my old folks alone and lost like that. My heart told me to keep the lady safe and make sure she's not scared. She was shaking the whole time I was holding her hands. Even after I tried putting the seat belt on her in the back seat of the police car, she didn't want to let go of my hands. I gave her a hug and told her she is going to be alright. She finally smiled and bye bye bye bye. (second English word she said the whole night)

And Thank you God, for your love. For keeping the lady safe and for putting us there to be with her.

What a night!

Halloween Scoop

Around three, my daughter went to her room to get ready for the Halloween. She was excited and calm at the same time, knowing it will be a fun Halloween trick or treating neighborhood. She chose this fairy looking costume, all fairies look alike anyway, attached a button switch to turn on blinking lights to brighten up the night and it changes color as well. It was beautiful and perfect for her. Guess what, the costume was an old one, maybe a year or two ago. I can't even remember. Just lucky that she still fits in that costume, thou it was a little tight and had to squeeze herself in. As it is a light blue color, a sparkly purple leggings match it up, knowing the cold fall season can break through into her tender skin during the night. She did it all by herself. What a proud mom I was on Halloween night!.

Har wii scaary?

This will be the first time my daughter will go trick or treating with a friend and that makes it more exciting, I guess. She was quiet but blend in with the other girls just fine. It was a little awkward since she will be the only one who doesn't live in this neighborhood, going with kids who live here. She met one or two from previous acquaintances through her friend's birthday party but the rest are strangers to her. Off they went, all eight of them and it was a blast. It did not matter where she lives. They were like they came from the same neighborhood with one same goal - to collect candies. From one corner to the next block, they swept all the candies from the homeowners' hands, check out the neat Halloween decorations in some houses, showing disappointed faces from houses with lights but nobody is home to open the door for candies. They run as if they want to make sure there is enough candies for them. They knocked on doors, alerting people to open their door. One house in particular prepared them to be cautious when the sound of a chainsaw machine blast on a backyard to scare the bad spirits away ( am not sure if that is their purpose) but it did scare some of the kids. Their eyes look in awe at the decorations and admire the creativity of the homeowner's artistic side. After an hour of going from house to house, something's shifting into the Halloween mood on that Haloween night. One by one, they admit defeat of walking tirelessly when the sack of candies start to feel weighty, legs feeling weak, they just want to go home and rest. On the very last house they knocked, who apologize for running out of candies and end up with apples instead! These kids are persistent!

We went inside her friend's house, drop all candies on the floor to pick and throw. Well, we didn't really throw the candies away but will be using it for giveaways to share with other kids someday. It was fun to see them share their favorite candies, kind of knowing who likes what and giving the candies to the right person. The chocolate ones disappeared the most in each basket. The cheap candies and not so famous ones end up in a big bag to share with others. It was peaceful and no whining at all, as if they know what to do to make this halloween night less scary and brighter.

As we were walking to the car, her dress light up! She totally forgot about the blinking lights on her dress until it reminded her by making it happen without any help from her. So unforgettable! Her dress blinking madly all the way home.

Reuse broken pottery and vase

Cheap old vase, looks better now
With all the broken and unused pottery around the house, my mind was racing against throwing them away or reuse them. They have been laying here and there for months, ready to leave if I pick them up and move towards the black trash can waiting by the driveway.
Pen holder turn to herb planter
A gift from someone who cares
Some are stack up together and some, isolated and hidden by weeds. With all the potteries laying around, I line them up and look at them to envision what would be best for the wasted potteries, who were all begging for attention and be the next one to be chosen. Some are cheap, some are cute and some pricey, thou not really pricey as I am frugal.

Unused vase, now adds beauty to my kitchen
So, while staring at them and brain raking for ideas before decisions are to be made and regret it! I have the bright light on, making sure I'd see every details with my keen observation as if I am auctioning it for the best price, errr, actually ideas. At the end my inner desire to be frugal hold on to my sane mind and decided to keep them and eventually reuse them to beautify any boring corner of my house. This time, they will look more alive with any living creatures in them like green plants, green plants with flowers and green plants that travel. Yes, they are going to be use as house pots! Like a vase, just the way they use to be. So, here comes the old, unused and broken potteries - the new look. All of them became a home for some of my plants. And it's good Feng Shui for my house.

A 6 year old in China left to care for himself.

Six years ago, Ah Long's parents built a house on a hilltop until they passed away and left Ah Long orphan. Last year,   his mother died when he was only 5. She got so sick, was really bad and got so skinny. The once robust father showed the same symptoms and passed away after a year.  At an early age, Ah Long discovered life's hardship with his mother gone. But life is not only hard but cruel for less than a year after his mother's passing, his father followed. He also died of AIDS. It was heartrending for a child so young to become an orphan.

His parent's family took pity on him but were all scared of being infected. In fact, someone was willing to to adopt him.  Before the adoption process,  Ah Long  went through a series of test and the doctors diagnosed him with AIDS. It is for this reason that the couple who wish to adopt him no longer want to proceed for concern of getting it. He was ready for school but was refused because the parents were against the idea of him in the school because of AIDS.  He end up staying home, like a hermit, like a prisoner of his own home. It was like a life nobody wanted. A person nobody wants to be part of.

His grandmother who is 84 years old comes to visit when she can and check on ah Long. It takes a 15 minute walk to get to Ah Longs house. She planted some vegetables close to the house for him to eat but that is all she can do for him. He learned to cook to take care of himself. He learned to read and write. He lived by himself, alone and surviving.

Upon hearing this true story of a 6 year old, I ask myself what kind of a life would that be? 6 and alone. How can he survived loneliness? How is he going to learn love when no one is there to love him?  So many questions in my mind, with no answers.  He must have a heart of stone. He must be tough...

What could be the driving force that keep him going on life,  to keep surviving, to keep living, alone?  What about those moments when he needs someone to talk to? Those moments when he has questions and he could not find the answer? Those nights when it is cold and there is nobody to keep him warm? What about if he slip and get a booboo and nobody to comfort him? I am at loss of words for my heart is crying for his pain, for his loneliness and for his health...

I pray that someone, somewhere out there would give this 6 year old boy the love that he needed. That God will send angels to keep him safe, to enhance his earthly life with new discoveries each day to survive and enjoy the heavenly blessings - his surviving power to live with the life given to him. His acceptance of his life prepared him to keep going, I suppose.

My admiration for this young boy made me realize that if he made it, why can't I? And so I pray...

Cupcake Party

While cruising around Walmart, we passed  by the cart of Opps! we bake too much for the day and saw boxes of cupcakes in different colors and designs.  They are marked down to 70% off  and comes out really cheap. For a dozen mini cupcakes, it would only cost $1.50 for 12 pieces. My daughter was delighted! Thinking her mother would buy her that box of cupcake as it is markdown to just a little over a dollar. She begged, please.

It has been a while since she last have a piece of cupcake and so as a nice mother can be, she agreed to get one box for her. She was estatic with a loud yeyyyyy!

We got home and she forgot about the cupcake. A day passed and the cupcake sat in the top shelf of the fridge waiting for attention. Finally, the mother can not let a day passed with the cupcake begging for attention, told the daughter to try one. And so she did. She eats one a day but there were too many, a dozen would take 12 days to finish, longer when it excludes weekend. The mother could not bear seeing it, decided to deal with the cupcake. Encouraging her daughter to have some cupcakes, a two maybe for today. The daughter sensing the mother's persistence ask her mother if she would like to have some with her with a begging PLEASEeee....

The mother obliged, hoping to get rid of it immediately. But at the back of her mind it was a struggle as she has been trying to avoid sweets to lose some weight. How can a mother refused the sweet please from her dear daughter. So, out the box of cupcakes from the fridge. The mother had one and the daughter had one. As the mother was busying herself from other house chores, the daughter decided to have another mini cupcake. It was at this very moment the magic happens. The daughter cautiously pick one cupcake up with her tiny hand when it slip from her finger and bounce into the box of cupcakes, while her hand tried to save one cupcake from falling to the floor, she accidentally hit the tip of the cupcake container and out flew all cupcakes on the floor. Oh no!!!

On the floor landed all 10 cupcakes, some kissing the floor with their icing and some landed on the bottom paper cups. The floor became colorful with all the sprinkles of different colors and yet the cupcakes all look yummy to me. The daughter's face was sad and wrinkly from the anger and despoilment of the incident, it was bad. The mother seeing the look in her face was quick to come and help pick up all cupcakes on the floor and said : " Well, we might as well have a cupcake party as all cupcakes wants to get out of the box. How about we eat them and enjoy them like having a party?" The daughter was torn between two cupcakes - yummy  but kissed the floor cupcakes. At the end, the only word that matters to her was yummy no forgetting the dirty floor. We both sat on the floor and each have a cupcake on our hands. Like we are only serving cupcakes on the floor party. I had one just enough for my big mouth and she ate one. We divided evenly the cupcakes but end up not finishing it because the word dirty came to her mind and she stop eating the cupcakes. It became too much to eat for her and both made the decision "no more buying of cupcakes".

Both were happy with the decision they made and now aiming for a much healthier snack, no more place to even think of having cupcakes,we threw them all to the trash can. The trash can now happy with full of sugar cupcakes junk food. They belong there!

It was a less than 10 minute party with good result. The daughter promised out loud " no more buying cupcakes for the rest of the year" and the mother happy, silently whispers " no more telling you enough junk cupcakes for the rest of the year".

Quickie Dinner Rolls ready to roll

Quick Easy rolls

1 cup warm water
2 packages ( tablespoon) active dry yeast
1 stick butter equivalent to 1/2 cup
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 t salt
4-41/2 cups all purpose flour

Combine warm water and yeast in a measuring cup with a little sprinkle of sugar and set aside until the foam starts to build up, like 2-4 minutes, depending on the room temperature. If you kitchen is warmer, it should start foaming in a minute or two.

Mix butter, sugar, eggs ( at room temperature), salt and flour, one cup at a time. Stir the mixture until all flour mixed in and dough start to stiffened to mix. Cover it with a plastic and let it rise more or an hour. Then it is time to put it in the fridge. Keep it in the fridge for  4 days and be ready for rolls when you need them.

If you are ready to make some for a little snack, cut a quarter of the dough and start rolling into into several balls pieces on a lightly floured board to avoid sticking to your hand. Depending on how much rolls you want for the day and return the rest of the dough back in the fridge for next day rolls.

Grease the baking pan and lined the balls of unbaked rolls, cover and let dough rise in an hour or less.

Preheat oven to 375 and back for 10-15 minutes. Brush warm rolls with melted butter.

On my part, I use the portable oven or mini-oven for baking a little batch as it is good for one serving.  It only takes 10 minutes to bake a small batch and doesn't heat the house during summer months.

Most of the time, I would add a mixture of cinnamon, sugar and butter on top for a cinnamon roll taste.

Pick a pear for me

The weather seems cool today, despite summer is here. This is what I describe as summer chill. The mornings break open with draftiness, under your own steam outside needs a pair of socks to temperate my feet together with a pair of running shoes. A light jacket helps swathe my back to keep me from getting cold. Just a prevention from sickness that appears once in a while when weather is unpredictable.

The pear tree is satiated with pears, small and firm, yet ready to be taken. I need a ladder to find the best one. They are medium sized, maybe not enough water, I thought. Luckily, a ladder was standing next to the playhouse where I use to play as a kid. The playhouse look dilapidated but standing silently. It is shabby yet full of memories. I picked the ladder with my right hand and carried it next to the pear tree. I climbed the few steps after situating it to the best place, where pears are bounty, waiting for me. Up, up and above, high enough to reach bunch of pears gathered one area, I touched each one, compare size and picked the biggest one. That's what I thought but I was off beam. When I examined the pear, it no bigger than any of the rest. Disappointed, I held myself responsible like it was a bad assessment. Like the decisions I made with my life. It was big and failure crept inside me. I came down the ladder and sit there for a while. Reflecting on my recent action, decision and my mood.

Oh well, it is no different from daily decisions made by me. It happened a few times. Those times when I chased the rainbow, those times where I want the best of me. It dawned on me that choosing something I believe in, is what matters. I may have chased the rainbow a few times but it was worth chasing them because I believe in my rainbows. I had fun chasing the rainbows, learning, yearning, and growing all at once. It was in those times that I have became a better person, a better experience and a better strength to face the next challenge in life.

Then I enjoy the pear, so scrumptious and fresh from the tree. This is my pick a pear for me moment and it was worth the time.

Funny questions for laughs

Why isn't the number 11 pronounced onety-one?

If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea...does that mean that one out of five enjoys it?

Why do croutons come in airtight packages?
Aren't they just stale bread to begin with?

If people from Poland are called Poles, then why aren't people from Holland called Holes?

If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?

Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist, but a person who drives a racecar is not called a racist?

If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, then doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?

If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it Fed UP?

Do Lipton Tea employees take 'coffee breaks?'

What hair color do they put on the driver's licenses of bald men?

I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny little spoons and forks, so I wondered what do Chinese mothers use, Toothpicks?

Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do, write to them? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen can look for them while they deliver the mail?

Is it true that you never really learn to swear until you learn to drive?

If a cow laughed, would milk come out of her nose?

Whatever happened to Preparations A through G ?

Now, stop laughing long enough to forward this onto somebody else who could also use a good chuckle!!

Yosemite Park, California

We visited Yosemite Falls on a nice Saturday when the weather is getting ready for summer, not quite hot yet. The entrance fee cost $20 per car and $40 for a year pass which is a better deal to purchase if you plan to visit Yosemite Park few times in a year. It is a nice place to frequent when time allows, serene and fresher air with all the tall trees you can see around. There were a lot of tourists roaming around that day. The bike paths looks busy with all kinds of bike and riders. Squirrels roam around freely, trying to hide from people whenever they see one, yet can't resist picking some nuts for them to enjoy. There was this one squirrel feeling trap by us, humans. I was getting out of the restroom and notice some noisy people rushing with their ipad. On the corner, was a squirrel, holding a pine cone just perfect for him. He was looking around, must be wondering what to do as he is surrounded by us. I was standing at the back ( I just got out of the restroom), 3 people sitting ( getting ready with their ipad) on a bench facing the squirrel, a photographer trying to take a good shot of him and a passerby who stop to watch the whole thing. He went around and round, trying to find a way out but holding tight of the pine cone. I moved away to give room for the squirrel to ran far from us. It was a fun moment to pass the time, relaxing and humane.

Nice place to visit...

Why I Made The Choice Not to Undergo Chemotherapy

Why I Made The Choice Not to Undergo Chemotherapy
By Penelope Villabert

Are you sure you have cancer?  Why aren’t you on chemotherapy? Do you really think alternative treatment will help you?

I am the least person who gets irritated when family and friends ask me these questions. It only shows they are concerned, worried, and well, a bit curious. Before I proceed, let me clear some issues.

My respect for those in the medical field will never fade. I have many relatives who belong to this incredibly intelligent and gifted group of professionals. I would like to make special mention my cousin Dr. Nanette Catigbe, presently in Cagayan de Oro, and my Aunt Dr. Claudia Smithtivas, living in Florida. Both of them are nephrologists or doctors trained in the diagnosis and management of kidney diseases. I also dreamed of becoming a physician specializing in cardiology when I was a little girl.

I was not much of a believer in the unconventional treatment of diseases which I thought was just work of quacks (my apology). When I was diagnosed, the things I had in mind were surgery, chemotherapy and radiation for my treatment. For me, they are tried, tested and proven scientifically. There was no need for me to look for other treatment.

But if you believe in divine intervention, you will surely understand why I changed my decision. Praying and reading Psalm 91 everyday really helped and continues to help amazingly. We made appointments with our Internist. While waiting, we visited Dr. Romy Paredes, a physician who shifted from conventional to bio-integrative way of treating ailments. Certainly not a quack as I used to think of. His consultation was by appointment but I was given a slot. There was still a long line of patients when we returned to the clinic of our Internist. My number was  far behind the others. We were never accommodated. This happened twice so we cancelled our third appointment.  Now, you know what I mean. God was leading me to a better way of healing which will suit me best. But that very moment, I never understood why it was happening because my mind was preoccupied with my cancer.

For the first question: Are you sure you have cancer?
Doctors were sure of it. Cancer of the pancreas with metastases in the liver, which had multiple cyst, mild splenomegaly and later it was discovered I also had a cyst in my left ovary. Not to mention I had all the symptoms. Diarrhea, nausea, bloated stomach and back pains. In fact, I remember reading the result to my cousin Doc Nanette five days after the conclusive medical tests and I clearly recall what she said, “Pen, be very careful. Two to three weeks from now it will be very painful.”

Second question: Why aren’t you on chemotherapy?
The size of the tumor in my pancreas which was 821.7 cubic cm (as big as a fist) made it hardly operable. Good thing because I was really scared of going under the knife for the sixth time. I had three caesarian operations, laparoscopic surgery (my gall bladder had to be removed because of the multiple cholesterol stones) and hysterectomy (I had a big, benign tumor in the uterus).

The next option would be chemo and radiation. Why did I skip these procedures?
I did a lot of thinking.  I know of people on chemo and they become bald and weak. They become weak because chemo does not only destroy the cancer cells but also the surrounding healthy cells. Unless your immune system is really strong, you will be able to fight it. There are those who survived but after many years, cancer comes back and is more lethal. I could not imagine myself becoming bald. I did not want the quality of my active life to be affected by chemo. Who will cook and prepare meals for my family? Who will clean our home, feed the dogs and do the laundry? It was also bad timing. We had to let go of our two helpers and I had to do everything because a restructuring was made in the company my husband is working and his income was slashed into half of what he used to receive. But as they say, God will provide for those who trust Him and after I was diagnosed we were able to hire helpers again. God is really great all the time.

For the last question: Do you really think alternative treatment will help you?
It is not just an alternative treatment. It is the holistic approach of treating diseases. It has been nine months since I was diagnosed.Tumor is getting smaller, the other affected organs are now normal, pncreatic cancer test is normal  - No surgery, chemo or radiation. Just vitamin C and hydrogen peroxide immunotherapy, at least 10 grams of Vitamin C everyday. One liter of alkaline water with 9.0 ph level first thing in the morning after praying, pure fruit juice (guyabano and carrot are my faves) three times or more in a day, coffee enema, no meat of all kinds, dairy products, sweets and preserved foods. Only fruits and veggies especially squash, kamunggay, kamote, saging saba, lots of garlic, onions, bell peppers, ginger, lemon grass, red or brown rice. The only seasoning is rock salt. Lots of sunshine between 7-10m am, deep breathing, exercise (I do taebo, cycling and dancing alternately) and gazillions of happy thoughts, smiles and laughter. I also talk to my body a lot. I thank them, apologize, inspire them and just anything especially about God's healing for us. I sing to and for them, too.I do the same thing to my immune system, the most powerful army God created in the whole world. I do not feel pain only little discomfort when I can feel the tumor dissolving, shredding and melting.  And one thing Dr. Romy Paredes keeps on reminding, OUR BODY CAN HEAL ITSELF. But it goes beyond positive thinking and mind over matter. THE HEALER IN US IS AWAKENED BY GREAT FAITH IN GOD FROM WHOM EVERYTHING COMES. HIS GRACE WILL HELP OUR BODY HEAL ITSELF. When the body heals, it does not heal selectively but as a whole, slowly but surely. We should also act on that faith by doing what we are supposed to do right. God has given us all the natural remedies from His bounty. EXPEL THE TOXINS, FEED THE BODY RIGHT AND GOD WILL HEAL. TO GOD BE THE GLORY! GOD BLESS US ALL!
p.s. -but i admit there are side effects... no more high blood pressure and no more Micardis and Vidastat, my daily maintenance.... :)

Spring Blooms

All around the valley starts to bud and some already have flowers at this month. It is nice to drive along the road with rows of pink flowers blooming for almonds, white for peaches and others. It sure reminds me of starting anew, my thoughts, my plans and becoming a better person as I age. The trees are bearing new fruits,  like becoming a new person with new good habits to share..

O beautiful Hawaii Sceneries

Hawaii is a wonderful place to visit. It has a lot to offer especially for people who love the ocean, the blue skies and the tranquility that nature brings. These are pictures taken by different photographers featured in a calendar given to me by a friend who moved from Hawaii to stay close with her family. She sure miss Hawaii and the pictures on the walls with the calendars make it easier to remember how long has it been since the last time she set foot on the beautiful Hawaii.

Someday, I want to set foot on this beautiful island with beautiful people.
